Exceptional Springfield 1903 Rod Bayonet Rifle, 6475, A-1817
$32,995.00
Phenomenal, original condition 1903 Springfield Rod Bayonet rifle, one of fewer than 100 that were never converted, an extraordinary example that will be nearly impossible to upgrade.
In 1903, the US Military adopted the Model 1903 Springfield rifle, replacing the short-lived Krag-Jorgenson rifle. With approximately 74,500 first pattern rifles chambered in .30-03 cartridge and the integral rod bayonet, a limited number were shipped to West Point and U.S. Army garrisons in both the Philippines and Alaska. Following an order by President Theodore Roosevelt directing the Ordnance Department to stop production to allow acceptance of a standard knife-type bayonet, nearly all completed Model 1903s were altered by the Springfield Armory to ensure compatibility with the Model 1905 Bayonet and re-chambered for the .30-06 cartridge. There are less than 100 of the all original, unmodified M1903 Rod Bayonet Rifles in existence today, with many in museums, this example being one of the best to remain in private hands.
This rifle has a 24 1/4” barrel whose front sight remains protected with the original shroud. Correct Krag-style rear sight with 100 yard increments having windage adjustment and notch/peep-sight. The early style clearance cut in the guard allows the gun to fire if the trigger is pressed forward, an issue that was corrected in later production. The bolt handle is a mottled oil quenched gray with excellent oil quenched case-hardening on the bolt shroud and vibrant color case-hardening on the safety, the correct early style with no spring-loaded plunger and concave faces. Markings include ‘U.S. Springfield Armory, Model 1903, 6475’ on the receiver, sharp cartouche with inspectors initials and dated 1904, and extremely crisp serifed circled “P” firing proof cartouche. Original metal buttplate with trapdoor, containing a nickeled thong and oiler, complete with brush, thong and jag.
Synopsis:
Phenomenal, original condition 1903 Springfield Rod Bayonet rifle, one of fewer than 100 that were never converted, an extraordinary example that will be nearly impossible to upgrade.
Condition:
Overall excellent, most metal parts retaining 95-99% bright original blue. The receiver retains all of its beautiful deep mottled oil quenched case-hardening. Oxidative changes on the barrel bands, bottom of trigger guard, and fading of the bolt handle as one would expect to see on a lightly used gun after 120 years. Comparable condition rod bayonet and stock, the cartouches especially crisp. Metal buttplate with scuffs and fading, again in keeping with the overall condition of the rifling. Bright bore. Perfect manual mechanics. An absolutely outstanding 1903 Rod Bayonet rifle, sure to be gem of any US Military collection and a Holy Grail for any Springfield enthusiasts!
