Fascinating Smith & Wesson, S&W, US Army 1917 Milestone Revolver, 878, FB00963
Description:
Extraordinary S&W 1917 Military Revolver, .45 ACP, a tool room sample, assembled to underscore a machining change in the cylinder that was implemented Sept 27 1918. This particular gun was formerly part of a S&W executive’s collection for many years. All major components, that were never finished, remain in-the-white. Minor exceptions include the thumb release and the ejector rod that are blued and the hammer, trigger, and lanyard ring that are color case hardened. Virtually all the standard markings have been completed including the caliber reference and patent dates on the barrel, the “MADE IN USA” on the right side of the frame, and the Military markings on the butt. As an unfinished revolver a serial number was never applied in that area. The only visible numbers are the assembly numbers “878” on the inner frame and crane. As a tool room/milestone revolver, the left side of the frame was marked “CYL. CHAMB. 457/ CHANGED SEPT. 27-18”. Several screws are missing from the sideplate along with the mainspring screw on the front strap. Fitted with the usual smooth walnut panels.
Condition:
EXC as one might expect from a tool room revolver that has remained in-the-white and largely untouched for over 100 years, small areas of congealed grease remaining in less accessible areas. EXC grips. Mirror bore. Perfect manual mechanics, though tensioning is understandably light as there is no real pressure on the mainspring. A super rare Military test piece, suitable for the most advanced Martial collector!
