The Bergmann M1896, No.4, in 8mm, reflected Bergmann’s earliest effort to make a large caliber pistol, based on the standard M1896 frame and blowback mechanism. These pistols, only 200-300 made, can be easily distinguished by their larger diameter barrel and the bore/gauge marking of “156/14” on the left side. The pistol is otherwise as per the later M1896, No. 3 with a drift adjustable front sight, notched rear sight, bolt with extractor and broad grip. Crown/C/U marking on the left side of the barrel and barrel extension. The left side of the frame with patent reference. The right side of the pistol has the Gagenau/Miner/VCS/ Suhl marking on the sideplate and the serial number on the forward frame. Small parts numbered to facilitate disassembly. Checkered walnut grips. Fixed lanyard loop. Major components rust blued. Small parts strawed or fire blued.
VG+ original finish with fading and oxidative flecking as carefully pictured, front and back strap etched and toned. Comparable condition small parts and grips, darked, stained and with superficial handling marks, showing no suggestion of enhancment. Bright bore with sharp rifling. Perfect manual mechanics. An exceedling scarce Bergmann, rarely offered for sale, especially nice that it is an ANTIQUE!
