An interesting late war M1 Garand made by Springfield Armory in early 1945, later reworked by Anniston Armory using Springfield parts.
Description:
Late war Springfield Armory M1 Garand rifle, early 1945, with late rebuilt Anniston-marked stock. Rear of receiver marked “U.S. RIFLE CAL .30 M1 SPRINGFIELD ARMORY” SN: 3485670, reflecting production in the first quarter of 1945 as further corroborated by the barrel date 2-45. Bolt with number D28287-19SA. Correct configuration sight with a narrow aperture and knurled windage/elevation knobs. Springfield marked operating rod with late form stamped and riveted follower rod. Stamped trigger housing. Springfield-marked hammer group D28290-7-SA, with reparkerized hammer marked C46015-9SA. Arsenal reworked stock, original boxed SA/NFR barely discernible, “AN” stamped on left side just behind pistol grip, encircled P on pistol grip barely discernible with a larger and deeper rework “P” below.
Condition:
G/VG original parkerizing on barrel, receiver, and gas tube with considerable thinning as would be expected from a combat rifle that has seen moderate-heavy use. The same consideration applies to the handguard that is oil darkened with numerous and noticeable handling marks. As a rework, it is not surprising that the hammer is a reparkerized replacement, the stock having been reworked/remarked at Anniston. Bright bore with sharp rifling. Correct manual mechanics.
