Description:
Early Smith & Wesson .38 Double Action Top-Break (4th Model) revolver with relatively scarce 5″ barrel, SN: 366774, manufactured circa 1895–1909 in serial range 322,701-539,000. Chambered for the .38 S&W cartridge, this revolver features Smith & Wesson’s automatic-ejecting top-break action, five-shot cylinder, and standard SA/DA lockwork of the period. The barrel rib is marked “SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD MASS. U.S.A.” with patent markings. SN: 366774 is stamped on the butt of the grip, repeated on the rear face of the cylinder, and under unlocking latch. Fitted with hard rubber grips, the SN scribed inside the right grip, though last digit may be a “3” or “7”. According to ATF, the last SN that qualifies as an antique is: 382,021, this revolver easily qualifying.
Condition:
VG original factory blue with sharp edge wear, handling marks, and freckling on the cylinder, consistent with a revolver that has been carried and seen moderate use. Near excellent color case hardening on the hammer and trigger with grips having slightly blunted checkering but no splits or losses. Bright bore with sharp rifling. Slow single-action cocking against mild resistance shows two cylinders index properly, three requiring a slight nudge.
