Description:
Phenomenal and Well Documented Bittner Repeating Pistol, Cased with Accessories. This outstanding example has a six-inch barrel with a fixed front sight. The fire blued rear sight is a cursor mounted on a ramp marked in three gradations from 50-150. The top of the chamber is marked with an eagle/3 Weipert proof mark, while the right side of the frame is stamped “PATENT BITTNER” over an encircled logo containing an intertwined “GB” surmounting a “W”, (Gustav Bittner, Weipert). This particular example is marked 2142.97 under the barrel, indicating it was the 2142nd pistol proofed in the Weipert Proof House in 1897. The serial number, marked internally, was recorded as “192” by the previous owner, well known author/researcher Dr. G. Sturgess. As true for all Bittners, the barrel is browned while the frame, sideplate, finger lever, safety, and bolt cap are color case hardened. The bolt is in the white. Forend and grips are nicely checkered with blunted points as typical for this gun. Complete with factory presentation case with full accessories in a wood-framed, black leather-clad, green baize-lined case with an original screwdriver with fire blued shaft, brass cleaning rod/bristle brush, grease bottle, and charger with deactivated rounds. Provenance: ex-Visser collection, ex-Dr. Geoffrey Sturgess collection, pictured “Von Ursprung der Selbstladepistole”, Vol 1, page 128.
Condition:
The barrel has approximately 98% of its original browned finish. The untouched case hardening still retains vivid colors under a lacquered coating with minimal sharp edge wear and fading of the straps. Bright in-the-white bolt and extractor show no evidence of cleaning. Original forend and grips with slight oil darkening and a few handling dings, a tiny chip missing from the upper front corner of the right panel. Generally bright bore with strong rifling, light corrosion in grooves. Correct manual mechanics. VG-EXC original case, latches intact, with scuffs and leather losses largely limited to edges and corners. Lid liner with oil-stained impression of the gun and accessories. The green felt is in similar condition, a small loss where in contact with the rear sight. Excellent oil bottle and nearly new screwdriver. VG+ original cleaning rod and ammunition charger/deactivated rounds. An absolutely fabulous ensemble with an impeccable pedigree that would be difficult to upgrade! ANTIQUE
