High condition, all matching WWII Japanese Arisaka Type 44 cavalry carbine in 6.5x50mmSR with intact Imperial chrysanthemum, dust cover, folding spike bayonet, and original sling by Koishikawa Arsenal.
Description:
Standard configuration Japanese Imperial Type 44 cavalry carbine chambered in 6.5x50mmSR with 18.5″ barrel and integral folding spike bayonet mounted beneath the forearm. Receiver topped with intact 16-petal Imperial chrysanthemum indicating this rifle remained Emperor’s property and was not surrendered through official channels. Top of receiver marked with Japanese characters “四四式” (Type 44) ahead of the chrysanthemum. Left side of receiver bears Koishikawa Arsenal mark along with serial number “56070” and inspection proofs. This carbine was designed specifically for Japanese cavalry in 1911 to provide mounted troops with a compact rifle featuring permanently attached folding bayonet. The Type 44’s shorter 38.25″ overall length and 8.8-pound weight made it ideal for cavalry and later jungle warfare where maneuverability was essential. Complete with original canvas sling with period metal fittings designed for cavalry carry. The Type 44 was discontinued in 1942 due to high manufacturing costs, making surviving examples relatively scarce among Japanese military rifles. This example represents a significant collector piece due to the intact Imperial marking and the seldom seen dust cover and sling.
Condition:
EXC original condition whose bright rust blue finish has only minimal sharp edge/handling wear. Light staining of in-the-white parts, such as the bolt, with minimal discoloration of the strawed pieces. Stock retaining most of its original varnish, with scattered handling marks. Please note the missing chip below the trigger guard tang as pictured. Comparable condition dust cover that is unnumbered. Faded buttplate. VG/VG+ sling with oxidative changes as pictured. Near mirror bore. Correct manual mechanics. An exceptionally nice and untouched Type 44 carbine with a crisp mum, comparable condition dust cover, and canvas sling. Extremely difficult to find in this condition!
