#1: Standard configuration Smith & Wesson 5-Shot Top Break 38 Perfected, made between 1909-1920 total production 59,400 revolvers, with 4″ barrel having half-moon front sight and fixed rear sight. The top of the barrel with the usual Smith and Wesson two line address/patent dates. The left side of the barrel marked “38 S. & W. CTG”. Right sideplate marked with the usual S&W logo. Color case hardened trigger and hammer. Full serial number on butt and cylinder with last four digits on small parts. Fitted with black hard rubber grips with the Smith & Wesson logo and diamond around the screw. Factory letter documents shipment from S&W on Feb. 6, 1917 to Schoverling Dale & Gale Co. in New York.
#2: Standard configuration Smith & Wesson 5-Shot Top Break 38 Hammerless Fifth Model with grip safety, made between 1907-1941 total production of 41,493 revolvers, with 4″ barrel having half-moon front sight and fixed rear sight. The top of the barrel with the single line Smith & Wesson address. Left side of the barrel marked “38 S. & W. CTG”. Right side of the barrel marked “SMITH & WESSON”. Right side of the frame with the usual S&W Logo and marked “MADE IN U.S.A.”. Color case hardened trigger. Full serial number on butt and cylinder with last four digits on small parts. Fitted with checkered walnut grips with diamond around screw. Factory letter documents shipment from S&W on Oct. 7, 1927 to Western Cartridge Company of East Alton, IL for “testing purpose.”
