Exceptional U.S. Army Contract Colt Model 1903 Double Action .38 revolver with correct military markings, matching inspector initials, manufactured 1903-1909, this example likely manufactured in 1909.
Description:
U.S. Army Contract Colt Model 1903 Double Action Army revolver, serial number 203075, manufactured between 1903-1909. This .38 caliber six-shot revolver has the standard 6″ barrel with fixed front sight and grooved rear sight. The top of the barrel has the two-line Colt address with patent dates, while the left side of the barrel is marked “COLT D.A. 38”. Frame, crane, and cylinder release are matched to the last 4 digits of the serial number “3075”. The butt is properly marked “U.S. ARMY MODEL 1903/No 203075” confirming military contract status. The lower barrel above the ejector rod bears the “R.A.C.” inspector marking that is repeated on the back of the cylinder (twice) and the left side of the frame. Fitted with smooth walnut grip panels, each pencil numbered with a matching “3075” and stamped “RAC” on the base, matching the inspector markings throughout. Complete with original rotatable lanyard ring.
Condition:
Phenomenal, nearly new condition as factory reworked. The only way to identify this revolver as a rework is noting the washed out JEH inspector initials that should be on the left side of the frame, at top near hammer. Only a remnant of the H is visible, and the softness of the 1903 date. The fire blue on the small parts is just as bright and vivid as the rest of the revolver. Grips are crisp with a scattering of very light handling marks. Most of the color case hardening remains on the lanyard ring. Mirror bright bore. Correct manual mechanics. An exceptional Colt 1903 military revolver whose reworked status is eclipsed by the quality and near-originality of its appearance.
